The archeological area is located in the southeastern part of the province of Grosseto and includes the municipal areas of Pitigliano and Sorano. It owes its name to the presence and distribution of tuff rocks. The area is characterized by striking rock settlements, villages and medieval fortifications built near important settlements dating back to the Etruscan-Roman period. The truly unique art-historical and landscape features perhaps deserve recognition by UNESCO, which would allow for greater appreciation and preservation of such sites. Historical centers to visit: Castell’Azzara, Pitigliano, Sorano, Sovana.
